For any Glitterbox fan, Mark Wardel’s images are instantly recognisable. Having captured the people of the party in his art, including performers like Lucy Fizz, Reece Le Beau, and the vibrant attendees, his images have graced the flyers of the events and become synonymous with the brand.

Now working with Wardel and local Shoreditch gallery Jealous, Glitterbox are launching a range of exclusive prints on the Defected Store, “the idea behind the collaboration between myself, Glitterbox and Jealous was to showcase the fact that these are more than just club flyers,” Wardel explains.

In the late 70’s when Wardel finished art school he moved from Liverpool to London to immerse himself in the thriving club scene. A life-long fan of David Bowie, he found himself becoming the ‘court painter’ of the infamous Blitz club, artistically capturing Bowie inspired luminaries like Boy George and Steve Strange. “I’ve always been obsessed with very strong and self-inventive people,” Wardel recalls. “[Bowie] espoused this thing that you don’t have to be the person that society tells you to be, and you can invent yourself into these fantastic characters.”

“The fact that Glitterbox was focusing on these people and giving them a platform really appealed to me and really fitted in with the style of artwork I was producing,” explains Wardel. It was from this point he and Glitterbox started to work together, producing inventive artwork for the party. “I’m really looking forward to everyone who comes to Glitterbox to be able to buy and own a piece of original art that they love, the genesis of which has come from the club they love.”

“Over the years art has been synonymous with great clubs, for example Keith Haring’s association with Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage from the mid 80’s is still a very iconic and resonates strongly with clubbers today. Mark Wardel has done a great job in giving Glitterbox a real identity, his illustrations of our performers and our dancers make our night instantly recognisable and make us stand out from the competition.”  Simon Dunmore
